Overview

South Africa runs its entry rules off one document: the Department of Home Affairs visa exemption list, most recently updated on 9 December 2025. For each country it states whether ordinary passports are exempt, for how long, and whether the people who do need a visa pay for it. In 2026 two new layers sit on top: the Electronic Travel Authorisation launched by the President on 12 August 2026, mandatory so far for Indian, Chinese, Indonesian and Mexican visitors, and the SARS online traveller declaration required of everyone since 1 July 2026.

Key points about South Africa entry rules: - Ordinary passports from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan are exempt for 90 days per visit. Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania are exempt for 90 days per calendar year. Poland, South Korea, Thailand, Türkiye and Jordan get 30 days - Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, Mexican, Nigerian, Pakistani, Philippine, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Moroccan, Colombian, Taiwanese, Ethiopian and Ugandan ordinary passports need a visa. The list's fee column exempts Indian, Egyptian and Mexican applicants from the visa fee; Nigerian, Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Moroccan, Ethiopian and Ugandan applicants pay it - The Electronic Travel Authorisation, piloted during the G20 presidency and launched on 12 August 2026, is the online route for visa-required nationals. Its first phase covers China, India, Mexico and Indonesia; SAnews reports it will be extended to all visa-required countries. The processing fee is R500 under the fee amendment of 17 August 2026, and visa-exempt travellers may buy one voluntarily - The visitor's visa itself costs R425 for nationalities that pay, is lodged through VFS Global or the mission, needs a passport valid 30 days beyond departure with a blank page, form BI-84, photos, funds, a return ticket and for children an unabridged birth certificate. Home Affairs' published turnaround is 60 working days - Since 1 July 2026 every traveller entering or leaving South Africa submits the SARS online traveller declaration, on the web, the SATMS app or a QR code; nobody is refused entry for not having one, but officials will make you complete it at the port - Tour groups from India and China can use the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme, under which vetted operators lodge group visas digitally and get outcomes on average within 24 hours

The exemption list in detail: The table has columns for diplomatic, official, service, ordinary and special passports, and a visa-fee column. Only the ordinary column matters for tourists. Where it is blank, an ordinary passport needs a visa even if diplomats are exempt: that is the case for India, China, Nigeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam, Ukraine, Morocco, Mexico, Ethiopia and Uganda. Countries not on the table at all, including Pakistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Colombia, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Myanmar and Taiwan, need a visa. "90 Days P/A" means 90 days in a calendar year, not per visit, and applies to Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania. Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea and Türkiye carry an asterisk: fees apply only to visits beyond the exempt period.

Where Indians, Nigerians and Filipinos stand: Indian citizens need a visa but pay no visa fee; they apply for the ETA (R500) or through VFS Global, and tour groups go through the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme. Nigerian citizens need a visa, pay R425 plus the VFS service charge, and apply through VFS in Lagos or the High Commission in Abuja; the ETA has not reached Nigeria yet. Philippine, Pakistani and Bangladeshi citizens are not on the table at all and apply for the visitor's visa through VFS or the mission. Chinese citizens use the ETA, with the R425 visa fee on top of the R500 processing fee.

Documents at the border: Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure (the UK government adds two blank pages; Home Affairs asks for at least one), the SARS declaration confirmation, a return ticket, proof of accommodation and funds, and a yellow fever certificate if arriving from a listed country. Children under 18 travel with an unabridged birth certificate and, if one parent is absent, that parent's consent.

Visa Types

Travel Tips

  • Read the exemption list yourself, and read the ordinary-passport column: several countries show 90 days for diplomats and a blank for tourists, including India, China, Nigeria, Mexico and Ukraine
  • Indian applicants pay no visa fee; if a centre or agent quotes a Home Affairs fee, query it. The ETA processing fee of R500 and VFS service charges still apply
  • Nigerian applicants: budget R425 plus the VFS charge, apply through VFS Lagos or the High Commission in Abuja, and start early; the published turnaround is 60 working days even if most decisions come sooner
  • Kenyan, Ghanaian and Tanzanian visitors: the 90 days are per calendar year, so a long stay in January leaves less for December
  • Submit the SARS traveller declaration on the SATMS app before you fly; it is free and you will otherwise queue for a kiosk at the port
  • Travelling with children: bring the unabridged birth certificate and, if the other parent is not travelling, their signed consent; airlines check this at boarding
  • The e-Visa portal at ehome.dha.gov.za still works; if the ETA portal does not yet list your nationality, the e-Visa or the VFS route is the one to use
  • Yellow fever: Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, Ugandan, Ethiopian and Brazilian arrivals must carry the certificate; airlines refuse boarding without it

At the Border

What to expect when you arrive

Entry Requirements

  • Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure, with at least one blank page (the UK government advises two)
  • For exempt nationalities, nothing more than the passport; for visa-required nationalities, the visa in the passport or the ETA or e-Visa approval
  • SARS online traveller declaration submitted before travel, or completed at the port
  • Return or onward ticket and proof of funds and accommodation
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or through a listed country
  • For children under 18: unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, plus parental consent, a court order or a death certificate where one or both parents are absent
  • Proof of purpose for the visit if asked: itinerary, invitation, conference registration

Conditions of Stay

  • The visitor's permit stamped on entry fixes the stay and is calculated from the date of entry; 90 days per visit for most exempt nationalities, 30 for some
  • Kenyan, Ghanaian and Tanzanian citizens have 90 days per calendar year in total, not per visit
  • A visitor's visa is for tourism or business of 90 days or less; work, study beyond the permitted short courses and medical treatment over three months need other visas
  • Extensions are applied for inside South Africa through VFS before the permit expires; Home Affairs lists a 60-working-day turnaround for the extension category
  • Overstaying results in being declared undesirable, with a ban of one to five years
  • The ETA is tied to the passport and the entry airport; changing passports means a new application

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa for South Africa?

Not if your ordinary passport is on the Home Affairs exemption list: British, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Irish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Brazilian, Argentine, Israeli, Russian, Saudi, Emirati, Malaysian, Singaporean and Japanese citizens get 90 days per visit; Kenyans, Ghanaians and Tanzanians 90 days per calendar year; Poles, South Koreans, Thais, Turks and Jordanians 30 days. Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, Mexican, Nigerian, Pakistani, Philippine, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Moroccan, Colombian, Ethiopian and Ugandan citizens need a visa or, where it has reached them, the ETA.

What is the South Africa ETA and who must get one?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation is the online route for visa-required nationals, launched by President Ramaphosa on 12 August 2026 after a pilot during the G20 presidency. Its first phase covers Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and Mexican ordinary passports for tourism and business, arriving at OR Tambo, Cape Town or Lanseria airports; SAnews reports it will be extended to all visa-required countries. The processing fee is R500 from 17 August 2026, on top of the R425 visa fee for nationalities that pay it. Visa-exempt travellers do not need one but may buy one to speed up the border.

Is the South Africa visa free for Indian citizens?

The visa fee is. The Home Affairs exemption list marks India as a country whose applicants pay no visa fee, so Indian visitors pay only the R500 ETA processing fee or the VFS Global service charge, depending on the route. Indian ordinary passports still need authorisation to enter: the ETA, an e-Visa, a visitor's visa through VFS, or a group visa through a Trusted Tour Operator.

How much is a South Africa visa for Nigerian citizens?

R425 for the visitor's visa, converted to naira, plus the VFS Global service charge. Nigeria is marked on the exemption list as a country whose applicants pay the fee. Applications go through VFS Global in Lagos or the High Commission in Abuja with biometrics, and Home Affairs' published turnaround is 60 working days. The ETA had not been extended to Nigerian passports as of 8 September 2026.

How long does a South Africa visitor visa take?

Home Affairs publishes 60 working days for a visitor's visa, counted without weekends and South African public holidays. Missions and the ETA often decide faster, and the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme returns group outcomes for Indian and Chinese tourists within about 24 hours, but the 60-day figure is the official standard to plan around.

Can Kenyans and Ghanaians visit South Africa without a visa?

Yes, for up to 90 days per calendar year. The exemption list marks both, and Tanzania, as "90 Days P/A", which the list defines as per annum or per calendar year. That is a running total, not a per-visit allowance. A yellow fever certificate is required at the border.

What is the SARS traveller declaration?

A customs declaration every traveller entering or leaving South Africa has been required to submit online since 1 July 2026, through the SARS portal, the SATMS app or a scan-to-declare QR code, covering goods and currency. It is free and separate from visas and the ETA. SARS states that nobody is refused entry for not having submitted it in advance, but officials and self-service kiosks will require it at the port.

What documents do children need to enter South Africa?

Home Affairs lists an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, and where a child travels with one parent or neither, the absent parent's consent, a court order or a death certificate. Airlines check these at boarding. The UK government advises checking the Home Affairs requirements before travel for every child under 18.

Are Filipinos, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis visa-free for South Africa?

No. None of the three appears on the exemption list, so all need a visitor's visa lodged through VFS Global or the South African mission, with the R425 fee, the service charge, form BI-84, photographs, a return ticket, proof of funds and accommodation. Home Affairs added a transit visa requirement for Pakistani and Bangladeshi passports on 1 August 2022, so even a stopover needs a visa.

Does Saudi Arabia get visa-free entry to South Africa?

Yes. The exemption list shows 90 days for Saudi ordinary passports, alongside the UAE and Qatar. Saudi travellers submit the SARS declaration and need nothing else for a visit of up to 90 days.

How to Apply

Visitor's visas are lodged at VFS Global centres in most countries with heavy demand, including India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Bangladesh, or at the South African mission where no centre exists. The Home Affairs fee is R425 for nationalities that pay, converted to local currency, plus the centre's service charge; Indian, Egyptian and Mexican applicants pay no visa fee under the exemption list. The Electronic Travel Authorisation at R500 is replacing the lodgement route for the nationalities it covers, starting with China, India, Indonesia and Mexico. Home Affairs publishes a 60-working-day turnaround for visitor's visas; missions and the ETA are usually faster, but the published figure is the one to plan around.
