Overview

South Korea is visa-free for more than 110 nationalities, but the entry rules depend on which of three lists your passport is on. Most Western, Latin American and East Asian passports enter without a visa for 30 to 180 days. Of those, 22 countries are temporarily excused from the K-ETA travel authorisation until 31 December 2026, while the rest, including Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Russia, must hold a K-ETA before boarding. Everyone else, including Indian, Nigerian, Pakistani, Philippine, Bangladeshi, Chinese and Vietnamese passport holders, needs a visa, with two narrow exceptions: Jeju Island by direct flight, and a 30-day transit for people holding a visa for the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Europe.

Key points about South Korea entry rules: - The K-ETA eligibility table is the official statement of who is visa-free and for how long: 90 days for the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Ireland, Romania, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Türkiye, Thailand, Morocco, Israel and Taiwan; three months for New Zealand, Mexico and Malaysia; six months for Canada; 60 days in a row and 90 in any 180 for Russia; 30 days for South Africa and Saudi Arabia - K-ETA costs KRW 10,000 plus a 3% card fee, is valid for three years or until the passport expires, and is normally decided within 72 hours. Nationals of 22 countries and regions are exempt until 31 December 2026: the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and Austria. Travellers under 18 or aged 65 and over are exempt everywhere - Since 1 January 2026 arrivals without a K-ETA submit the free e-Arrival Card online within three days before landing; the UK and Canadian governments note that a paper card is still accepted at the desk - Jeju Island admits visa-required nationals for up to 30 days if they fly in directly from abroad, except 23 nationalities including Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Iran and Iraq. Indian, Chinese, Philippine and Vietnamese passports qualify - Transit passengers holding a valid visa or residence for the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or one of 32 European countries may enter for up to 30 days on the way to or from that destination, with the same 23 nationalities excluded - Visa fees are set by reciprocity. Indian citizens pay Rs3,600 for a single entry under the 1 August 2026 revision plus the centre's charge; Nigerian citizens pay NGN 60,000; Pakistani citizens PKR 12,000; Philippine citizens no consular fee for short visits, only the PHP 1,000 centre fee. The USD 15 group visa fee is waived for tour groups from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Cambodia until 31 December 2026

Who needs a visa: Any nationality not on the K-ETA eligibility table. That includes India, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nepal, Kenya, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Myanmar, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and Iran. Ukraine was not on the table when checked on 8 September 2026. The short-term visit visa for tourism is the C-3-9; C-3-1 covers business meetings and events and C-3-4 general business. Applications are lodged in person at the embassy, or in India, Nigeria, the Philippines and many other countries at a Korea Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, BLS International or a similar contractor, which adds its own service fee. Since 1 July 2020 no visa sticker is issued: approved applicants print a Visa Grant Notice from the Korea Visa Portal.

Processing times differ sharply by mission: ten working days in India and the Philippines, 10 to 15 business days in Lagos, and a minimum of eight weeks in Pakistan, where the embassy warns that every application goes through additional screening. Apply well ahead of any trip.

Chinese tour groups: a visa-free trial for Chinese nationals in organised groups ran from 29 September 2025 to 30 June 2026. No extension of the visa-free trial had been published as of 8 September 2026; what was extended is the fee waiver on group visas.

Two clocks to watch: the K-ETA exemption for 22 countries and the group visa fee waiver both end on 31 December 2026 unless renewed. The exemption has been extended each December since 2023.

Visa Types

Travel Tips

  • Check which of the three lists you are on before anything else: visa-free and K-ETA-exempt (UK, US, Canada, Australia, most of Western Europe), visa-free but K-ETA required (Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Portugal, Ireland, Romania), or visa required (India, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Nigeria, Pakistan)
  • Apply for K-ETA only at k-eta.go.kr; the fee is KRW 10,000 and copycat sites charge several times that. Allow 72 hours, and longer in peak season
  • K-ETA-exempt travellers can still buy a K-ETA voluntarily; its one practical benefit is skipping the e-Arrival Card on every trip for three years
  • Set a reminder for the e-Arrival Card three days before you fly; it cannot be filed earlier and is free at e-arrivalcard.go.kr
  • Indian applicants: the Rs3,600 fee applies from 1 August 2026 and the centre charges Rs1,100 on top. Ten working days is the standard, but a request for extra documents or an interview adds ten more
  • Pakistani applicants: the embassy states a minimum of eight weeks, so apply at least three months ahead and bring six months of bank statements
  • Nigerian applicants: bank statements must be issued by a branch in the city you apply from and within 14 days; the Lagos office warns not to pay any agent for an appointment
  • Indian, Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese travellers who hold a valid US, Canadian, Australian or Schengen visa can enter for 30 days on a genuine transit to that country without applying for a Korean visa
  • Jeju is the back door for visa-required nationals, but only by direct international flight and only for Jeju; a connection through Seoul or Busan voids it

At the Border

What to expect when you arrive

Entry Requirements

  • Passport valid beyond your planned departure date for short visits (the UK and Canadian governments both state this); six months' validity is expected for long-term visas and by some missions for visa applications
  • For visa-free entry, a nationality on the K-ETA eligibility table, and either an approved K-ETA or membership of the 22-country temporary exemption
  • For visa holders, the printed Visa Grant Notice; no sticker is placed in the passport
  • e-Arrival Card submitted online within three days before arrival unless you hold a K-ETA or a residence card; a paper card is still accepted at the desk
  • Return or onward ticket and evidence of funds and accommodation, which immigration officers may ask for
  • For the Jeju waiver, arrival on a direct international flight or ship to Jeju without touching down elsewhere in Korea
  • For transit without a visa, a confirmed onward ticket departing within 30 days and the qualifying visa or residence document

Conditions of Stay

  • The visa-free stay is fixed per nationality: 90 days for most, 180 for Canadians, 30 for South Africans and Saudis, 60 in a row and 90 in any 180 for Russians. It cannot be extended for tourism
  • Leaving and re-entering to reset the clock is refused at the discretion of immigration; the embassy FAQ warns that visa runs are not accepted
  • K-ETA holders may enter repeatedly during the three-year validity, but each stay is capped at the nationality's allowance
  • Jeju visa-free entrants must stay within Jeju; travelling to the mainland needs a visa or permission from the Jeju immigration office
  • Transit-without-visa entrants have 30 days and must leave on the onward ticket to the qualifying destination or a third country, not back to the departure point
  • Visa-free and K-ETA entry do not permit paid work, study beyond 90 days, or journalism; those need the relevant D, E or other visa
  • Overstaying is fined by length and can bring an entry ban; fines above KRW 5 million disqualify future transit-without-visa entry

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa for South Korea?

Not if your nationality is on the K-ETA eligibility table, which covers more than 110 countries including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, the EU, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Russia. Whether you then need a K-ETA depends on whether your country is among the 22 temporarily exempt until 31 December 2026. Indian, Chinese, Philippine, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Nigerian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and most African and Middle Eastern passports need a visa, unless they qualify for the Jeju or transit waivers.

Which countries are exempt from K-ETA in 2026?

Twenty-two countries and regions, until 31 December 2026 under the Ministry of Justice extension announced on 29 December 2025: the United Kingdom, United States (including Guam), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and Austria. Everyone else who is visa-free, including Irish, Portuguese, Romanian, Thai, Malaysian, Brazilian, Mexican, South African, Saudi and Russian citizens, needs a K-ETA before boarding.

How long can I stay in South Korea without a visa?

It depends on your passport, per the K-ETA eligibility table: 90 days for British, American, Australian, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Irish, Romanian, Brazilian, Argentine, Peruvian, Colombian, Turkish, Thai, Moroccan, Israeli and Taiwanese citizens; three months for New Zealanders, Mexicans and Malaysians; six months for Canadians; 60 days in a row and no more than 90 in any 180 for Russians; 90 in a row and 90 in any 180 for Portuguese; and 30 days for South Africans and Saudis.

How much does K-ETA cost and how long does it take?

KRW 10,000, roughly US$7 to US$8, plus a 3% card processing charge, non-refundable even if refused. Assessment usually takes up to 72 hours but the immigration service says it can take longer, so apply at least a week before travel. Once approved it is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever is first, and covers multiple visits. Travellers under 18 or aged 65 and over do not need one.

What is the South Korea e-Arrival Card?

A free online arrival declaration introduced as the standard from 1 January 2026 for foreign nationals who do not hold a K-ETA. You submit passport, contact, purpose and accommodation details at e-arrivalcard.go.kr within three days before arrival and show the confirmation at immigration. K-ETA holders and residence card holders are exempt. The UK and Canadian governments both note that the paper card is still accepted on arrival for those who did not file online.

Can Indian citizens visit South Korea without a visa?

Not for a normal visit. Indian passports need a C-3-9 tourist visa: Rs3,600 for a single entry under the fee revision of 1 August 2026, Rs6,300 double, Rs8,100 multiple, plus the centre's Rs1,100 service charge, lodged at VFS Global in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai or Bengaluru or BLS International in Mumbai or Hyderabad, with a ten-working-day standard. Two exceptions: Jeju Island for up to 30 days by direct flight, and 30 days on the mainland in transit if you hold a valid US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or European visa and are travelling to or from that country.

How much is a South Korea visa for Nigerian citizens?

NGN 60,000 for a single entry of up to 90 days, NGN 90,000 for a single entry over 90 days, NGN 105,000 for a double entry and NGN 135,000 for a multiple-entry visa, per the Lagos office of the embassy. Processing is 10 to 15 business days and can run longer under high demand. Applications go to the Lagos office or the visa centre in Abuja depending on your state. Nigerian citizens are on the list of 23 nationalities excluded from both the Jeju and transit waivers.

How long does a South Korea visa take for Pakistani citizens?

A minimum of eight weeks from receipt, per the embassy's notice of 23 December 2025, at PKR 12,000 for a stay of up to 90 days or PKR 18,000 for longer. Applications are made in person at the embassy in Islamabad, or at the consulate in Karachi for Sindh residents, with six months of bank statements, flight and hotel reservations and proof of employment. Pakistani citizens are excluded from the Jeju and transit waivers.

Can Filipinos enter Jeju without a visa?

Yes. Philippine passports are not on the excluded list, so a direct international flight to Jeju gives up to 30 days on the island without a visa. For Seoul, Busan or anywhere else a C-3-9 visa is needed; the embassy charges no consular fee for short visits by Philippine passport holders, only the KVAC processing fee of PHP 1,000 since 25 August 2026, and standard processing is ten working days, five for express. Tour groups of three or more can use the e-group visa through designated travel agencies.

Is South Korea visa-free for Chinese citizens?

Not for individuals. Chinese passports need a visa for the mainland, though Jeju is visa-free for up to 30 days by direct flight. A visa-free trial for organised Chinese tour groups ran from 29 September 2025 to 30 June 2026; no extension had been published as of 8 September 2026. The USD 15 group visa fee is waived for Chinese tour groups until 31 December 2026, along with groups from Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Cambodia.

How to Apply

Visa applications go to the Korean embassy or consulate for your region, in person, or to a Korea Visa Application Centre where one operates: VFS Global in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru and BLS International in Mumbai and Hyderabad for India; the Lagos office of the embassy and a centre in Abuja for Nigeria; the embassy in Islamabad and the consulate in Karachi for Pakistan; and the KVAC in Taguig plus designated travel agencies for the Philippines. Consular fees are fixed by reciprocity, which is why the same C-3 visa costs Rs3,600 in India, NGN 60,000 in Nigeria, PKR 12,000 in Pakistan and nothing for Philippine passports. Centres add a service charge: Rs1,100 at BLS, PHP 1,000 at KVAC Manila.
