Nigerian citizens require a visa to visit the United Kingdom for all purposes, including tourism, business, family visits, and transit. Nigeria has historically high UK visa refusal rates, so your application will be assessed with particular attention to settlement intent, the genuineness of your funds, and whether your employment can be verified. That is not a reason to be discouraged — many Nigerians are approved every year — but it does mean a Nigerian application needs to be built more deliberately than most.

Where and how you apply

You complete the application online at gov.uk, pay the fee (Naira cards are accepted), then attend a biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre in Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt — applications cannot be lodged directly with the British High Commission. You can book at any of the three centres regardless of where you live. Centre addresses and opening hours change periodically, so confirm the current details on the VFS Global UK-Nigeria portal before your appointment. After biometrics, track your application online using your GWF reference number.

Timing, and whether to pay for priority

Standard processing takes roughly 3 weeks from your biometric appointment, stretching to 4-6 weeks in peak periods (April-August and December) and as long as 8-10 weeks during the busiest stretches. For that reason, Priority processing (£500 extra, decision in around 5-7 working days) is widely recommended for Nigerian applicants with fixed travel dates; Super Priority (£1,000 extra, next working day) exists but is subject to availability. If you travel to the UK regularly, long-term multiple-entry options cost £506 for 2 years (about ₦880,000), £903 for 5 years (about ₦1,570,000), and £1,128 for 10 years (about ₦1,960,000), with each stay still capped at 6 months.

The documents that carry the most weight

For Nigerian applicants, the pattern of your money matters more than the amount. Provide six months of BVN-linked statements from a recognised bank — GTBank, Access, Zenith, First Bank, or UBA — showing regular salary or business credits. A balance of ₦5,000,000 or more (roughly £2,700) is recommended for a typical trip, but a steady balance built over months is far more convincing than a large one-time deposit, which caseworkers treat as funds parked for the application. Round out your file with your NIN documentation, a tax clearance certificate from FIRS, and, for business owners, your CAC certificate, Form CO7, and memorandum of association. Property documents — Certificate of Occupancy, deed of assignment, or survey plan — are strong evidence of ties to Nigeria. Your employment letter should state your position, salary, start date, and approved leave, and be aware that UKVI may contact your employer directly to verify it, so make sure whoever answers can confirm the details. Also check gov.uk's list of countries requiring a tuberculosis test certificate: Nigeria is on it, and where a TB certificate is required it must come from a UK-approved clinic.

Why Nigerian applications get refused

Most Nigerian refusals cite paragraphs V 4.2 and V 4.3 together — the officer was not satisfied you are a genuine visitor who will leave, or that you can maintain yourself without working. The recurring triggers are funds that appear deposited specifically for the application, employment letters that could not be verified or contradicted the stated income, previous visits showing more time spent in the UK than in Nigeria, and sponsors whose status, income, or relationship to you was unclear. If someone in the UK is hosting you, include their proof of immigration status, employment, accommodation, and evidence of your relationship.

If you are refused

Visitor visa refusals carry no right of appeal. An Administrative Review (£80, decided in around 28 days) only helps if the caseworker made a factual error — you cannot submit new evidence. In most cases the better path is a fresh application, typically 3-6 months later, with a cover letter that calmly addresses every reason in the refusal letter. Be scrupulously honest about your immigration history: the UK shares data with the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, so undisclosed refusals or overstays elsewhere are likely to surface.
