Indian citizens require a visa for every visit to the United Kingdom — there is no visa-free entry or visa on arrival for Indian passport holders. The Standard Visitor visa covers tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, private medical treatment, and short courses of up to 30 days, all on a single application. Since February 2026 the UK issues eVisas linked to your passport number instead of physical visa stickers, so once a decision is made, check the details in your UKVI online account carefully before travelling.

Where you apply in India

You complete the application form on gov.uk, pay the fee (Indian bank cards and UPI payments are generally accepted), then attend a biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre — applications cannot be submitted directly to the British High Commission. VFS operates UK visa centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, and Ahmedabad, with additional centres in cities such as Chandigarh, Kochi, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Goa. You can book at any centre regardless of where you live, so if your nearest city has no early slots, check a neighbouring one. After submission, track your application online using your GWF reference number.

India generates more UK visa applications than any other country, and demand peaks between April and August and again in December and January — appointments and decisions both take longer in those windows. If your dates are tight, Priority processing (£500 extra, decision within 5 working days) is available at select centres, and Super Priority (£1,000 extra, decision by the next working day) is typically limited to Delhi and Mumbai. Frequent travellers can skip repeat applications entirely with long-term multiple-entry visit visas: 2 years (£506), 5 years (£903), or 10 years (£1,128), with each individual stay still capped at 6 months.

The documents that matter most for Indian applicants

UKVI places significant weight on Indian tax documentation. Include ITR acknowledgements for the last 2-3 years, Form 16 if you are salaried, and GST returns if you run a business — a consistent tax filing history is far more valuable than a large bank balance. Your six months of bank statements should show regular income that matches your declared salary; officers typically expect funds of roughly £150 per day of your stay plus travel costs, which works out to about ₹3-4 lakh for a two-week trip. Avoid large unexplained deposits close to the application date — they are viewed unfavourably. Your employment letter should state your position, salary, start date, and approved leave dates, and self-employed applicants should add company registration, GST registration, and business bank statements. If you have old passports with previous UK, US, or Schengen visas, include them: prior travel history meaningfully strengthens your file.

Why Indian applications get refused

The recurring refusal patterns from India are an income mismatch — declared salary that does not line up with bank statements or ITR filings — weak ties to India (no property, unstable employment, no family obligations shown), inconsistencies between your answers and your documents or a previous application, and generic employment letters that omit salary, tenure, or leave details. If a UK host is sponsoring you, their immigration status, income, and relationship to you will be assessed too, so include their eVisa share code or proof of status, employment details, and accommodation evidence.

Two practical tips

First, submit colour photocopies rather than originals — documents submitted through VFS are not returned, so keep your originals safe. Second, apply up to 3 months before your travel date and add a one-page cover letter that proactively addresses your purpose, your finances, and your ties to India. If you are refused, there is no formal appeal for visitor visas; a fresh application that squarely addresses the reasons in the refusal letter is usually the way forward.
