Visa Requirements for Mexican Citizens (2026)

Mexican passport travel guide

Mexican passport holders have unusually broad visa-free access — the Schengen Area, Japan for up to 180 days, the UAE, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey — and the United Kingdom now requires only a £20 Electronic Travel Authorisation. The United States, Canada and Australia are the significant exceptions that still require a full visa application. This guide covers the ten US consular posts in Mexico and how their wait times differ, when a Canadian eTA replaces the visitor visa, and current entry rules for every major destination.

Travel Tips for Mexican Citizens

  • You are usually not restricted to the US consulate nearest you — compare B1/B2 wait times across all ten posts on ustraveldocs.com before scheduling
  • Check whether a valid US visa or a Canadian visa held in the past 10 years qualifies you for the CAD 7 eTA before paying for a full Canadian visitor visa
  • The UK is now an ETA destination for Mexicans — £20 online, approved in minutes, valid for stays up to six months
  • Schengen, Japan (180 days), the UAE (180 days), Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey are all visa-free — the US, Canada and Australia are the main exceptions
  • Bring original documents to a US interview even though nothing is formally required beyond the DS-160 confirmation and passport — officers may ask about employment and ties
  • Canadian biometrics appointments are free to book; any site charging you to schedule one is not the official centre

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Mexicans need a visa for Europe?

No. Mexican passport holders travel visa-free to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Once ETIAS launches you will need to complete a short online pre-authorisation before travel, but that is not a visa and does not involve an appointment or an interview.

Do Mexicans need a visa for the UK?

Not a visa — Mexico is on the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation list. You apply online for a £20 ETA, which is usually approved within minutes and covers visits of up to six months. The old visitor visa route no longer applies to standard tourism and business trips.

Which US consulate in Mexico has the shortest visa wait time?

It changes constantly. The US maintains an embassy in Mexico City and consulates in Ciudad Juárez, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Matamoros, Mérida, Monterrey, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo and Tijuana. Wait times for B1/B2 interviews can differ by many months between posts. Check the current estimate for each location on ustraveldocs.com before scheduling — you are generally free to choose a post other than the one nearest you.

Can Mexican citizens get a Canadian eTA instead of a visa?

Sometimes. Mexican passport holders normally need a full visitor visa for Canada. The CAD 7 eTA is available if you have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa. Checking this first can save you the CAD 100 visa fee and a biometrics appointment.

How long can Mexicans stay in Japan without a visa?

Mexican passport holders receive a visa-free stay of up to 180 days in Japan, which is longer than almost any other nationality. Extensions are handled at a regional immigration bureau. You still need to satisfy the immigration officer on arrival about the purpose of your visit, onward travel and funds.

Where do I give biometrics for a Canadian visa in Mexico?

Canada operates visa application centres in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey for biometric collection, expanded in 2024 to reduce travel for applicants outside the capital. Submit the online application through the IRCC portal first, then book the biometrics appointment once you receive the biometric instruction letter. Booking the appointment itself is free.
