Visa Requirements for Malaysian Citizens (2026)

Malaysian passport travel guide

Malaysian passport holders travel visa-free across the Schengen Area, Japan, South Korea, Türkiye, Brazil, Mexico, the UAE, Thailand, China and South Africa. Two destinations are routinely misreported. The United Kingdom is no longer visa-free — it requires a £20 Electronic Travel Authorisation granted before departure. And Canada's May 2026 change, widely described as visa-free travel, is actually a conditional eTA: it applies to air travel only and requires a Canadian visitor visa held within the past 10 years or a valid US non-immigrant visa. The United States remains a full visa application with an interview in Kuala Lumpur.

Travel Tips for Malaysian Citizens

  • The UK ETA must be granted before you fly — Malaysia moved from visa-free entry to the £20 scheme, and airlines check it at boarding
  • Canada's May 2026 change is a conditional eTA, not visa-free access: you need a Canadian visitor visa held in the past 10 years or a valid US non-immigrant visa, and it covers air travel only
  • If you do not meet the Canadian eTA conditions, budget for the full CAD 100 visitor visa, biometrics and roughly four to eight weeks of processing
  • Apply for the Canadian eTA and the UK ETA only on the official government sites — third-party sites charge many times the CAD 7 and £20 real fees for the same thing
  • Submit the Singapore Arrival Card online before travel even though no visa is needed — it is separate from immigration clearance and is checked on arrival
  • The Australian ETA is granted through the official app rather than a website, and needs a passport scan and a selfie

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Malaysians need a visa for the UK?

Not a visa, but you do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Malaysia is on the UK ETA scheme, so you apply online for a £20 authorisation before you fly. It is normally approved within minutes, covers stays of up to six months per visit, and remains valid for two years or until your passport expires. This replaced the previous visa-free arrangement, so arriving without one is a boarding refusal, not a problem you can fix at the border.

Can Malaysians travel to Canada without a visa?

Only some Malaysians, and only by air. Since 26 May 2026 Malaysia has been part of Canada's eTA expansion program, which means you can apply for the CAD 7 eTA instead of a visitor visa if you have held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa. If neither applies, you still need a full visitor visa. The eTA route also covers air travel only — arriving by car, bus, train or boat requires a visa regardless of eligibility. Headlines describing this as visa-free travel for Malaysia overstate it.

Do Malaysians need a visa for the United States?

Yes. Malaysia is not part of the Visa Waiver Program, so a B1/B2 visitor visa with an in-person interview at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is required. Complete the DS-160, pay the $185 fee and schedule the interview. Bring evidence of employment, funds and ties to Malaysia even though no formal document list is published.

Do Malaysians need a visa for Europe?

No. Malaysian passport holders travel visa-free to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. ETIAS, a short online pre-authorisation, will be required once it launches — it is a form completed in minutes, not a visa application with an appointment.

How do Malaysians get an Australian visa?

Through the Australian ETA, subclass 601, applied for on the official Australian ETA app for iOS or Android. It costs AUD 20, is usually granted within minutes to an hour, and is valid for 12 months with multiple entries of up to three months each. There is no embassy visit and no paper application, but it must be granted before you travel.

Where can Malaysians travel with no advance paperwork at all?

The Schengen Area, Japan (90 days), South Korea (90 days), Türkiye (90 days), Brazil (90 days), Mexico (180 days), the UAE (30 days, extendable), Thailand (30 days), China (30 days under mutual exemption) and South Africa (30 days) all require nothing before departure. Singapore is visa-free for 30 days but the SG Arrival Card must be submitted online first. The UK and Australia need a paid online authorisation, Canada needs either a conditional eTA or a visa, and the US needs a full visa.
