Because Addis is a major connecting hub, transit rules matter more here than for most nationalities — a European connection that involves changing terminals or staying overnight usually means clearing immigration, which is a separate question from your destination visa.

Where do Ethiopians apply for a UK visa?
At the VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Addis Ababa, on the sixth floor of the NIB International Bank headquarters on Ras Abebe Aragay Street. VFS Global took over UK visa services in Ethiopia from 19 November 2024, so guides naming a different provider are out of date. Complete and pay for the application on GOV.UK first, then book the biometrics appointment — you cannot walk in.
Do Ethiopians need a visa for Thailand?
Not in advance, for now. Ethiopian passport holders can currently obtain a visa on arrival at designated Thai airports, valid for 15 days and costing around ฿2,000, non-extendable. Bring a passport photo, proof of onward travel within 15 days, confirmed accommodation and evidence of funds. But this is on borrowed time: on 19 May 2026 the Thai Cabinet approved cutting the visa-on-arrival list to Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia only, taking effect 15 days after Royal Gazette publication. As of August 2026 that publication is still pending — check whether it has happened before relying on visa on arrival, and if it has, apply for an eVisa in advance instead.
Can Ethiopians visit Singapore without a visa?
Yes. Ethiopian passport holders receive 30 days visa-free for tourism in Singapore. You still need to submit the SG Arrival Card online before arriving — that is a separate electronic declaration, not a visa, and it is checked at immigration. Singapore is the most accessible major destination for Ethiopian travellers building documented travel history.
Can Ethiopians get a Canadian eTA?
No. Canada runs a conditional eTA route for a specific list of visa-required countries and Ethiopia is not on it. A full visitor visa is required, with the CAD 100 fee, biometrics at the visa application centre in Addis Ababa and processing of roughly four to eight weeks. A valid US visa does not create an eTA route.
Do I need a transit visa when connecting through Europe from Addis?
It depends on the airport and the airline. Many Schengen airports allow airside transit without a visa for Ethiopian passport holders, but some member states require an Airport Transit Visa for certain nationalities, and any change of terminal or overnight connection normally means clearing immigration. Since routings through Europe are common from Addis, confirm the transit rules for your specific connecting airport with the airline before booking.
How long does a Schengen visa take from Ethiopia?
The standard processing time is around 15 calendar days from the appointment, extendable to 45 days if the consulate requests additional documents. In practice the appointment itself is the bottleneck — availability at the Addis centres is limited, so begin looking two to three months before travel. Travel insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover is mandatory and is checked at submission.
