Diwali 2026 Trips Without a Visa Headache: Thailand, Dubai, Sri Lanka and Malaysia for Indian Passport Holders

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with Lakshmi Puja that evening. Dhanteras on 6 November, Diwali on the Sunday and Bhai Dooj on the following Tuesday create a natural long weekend, and the days either side are the busiest of the year for short-haul international travel out of India.

Four destinations dominate Indian bookings for the week: Thailand, Dubai, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. All four are within about five hours of the major metros, and none needs a consular visa for a holiday. But each has changed its entry rules in 2026, and "visa-free" no longer means "nothing to do before you fly". This guide sets out what an Indian passport needs for each, how far ahead to sort it, and where the traps are.

The four destinations compared

Thailand: 30 days visa-free, TDAC mandatory

Thailand is the most popular of the four, and it is the one with the newest rule. Four regulations published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 take effect on 15 September 2026, replacing the 60-day exemption. India is on the new 30-day list alongside 59 other countries and territories.

For a Diwali trip that is more than enough. Points to note:

• 30 days per entry, extendable once by up to 30 days at a Thai immigration office. The extension is at the officer's discretion and a fee of 1,900 THB is widely reported. If you know you want more than 30 days, apply for a single-entry Tourist Visa (60 days, 1,000 THB) on the Thai e-Visa portal instead.
• Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) at tdac.immigration.go.th before you land. It is free. Sites charging a fee to "process" it are not official.
• Land-border entries under the exemption are capped at two per calendar year from 15 September. Irrelevant for a Bangkok or Phuket flight, relevant if you are looping through Malaysia overland.
• Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel and funds; carry your return ticket and a hotel booking.

Dubai and the UAE: check what else is in your passport

The UAE is the destination where "do Indians need a visa?" has the least straightforward answer. Indian ordinary-passport holders do not get visa-free entry. What they may get is a visa on arrival, and only in one situation.

Who qualifies for visa on arrival

According to UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs missions and the GDRFA in Dubai, an Indian citizen holding one of the following can obtain a visa on arrival:

• a valid US visa,
• a valid US green card,
• a valid UK residence permit, or
• a valid EU residence permit.

The passport and the qualifying document must each be valid for at least six months. The visa on arrival is valid for 14 days and can be extended once for a similar period. UAE missions quote AED 100 for the entry permit and AED 250 for the extension; GDRFA's online pre-approval channel lists AED 253, so expect the figure to vary slightly by where you pay.

A Schengen visa, a Canadian visa or an Australian visa does not qualify. Nor does an expired US visa, however recent.

Everyone else: arrange a visit visa

If you do not hold a qualifying document, you need a visit visa issued before travel. Airlines (Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, Air India through its partners), hotels and licensed UAE travel agencies sponsor 30-day and 60-day tourist visas. Overstaying is expensive

UAE overstay fines run at AED 50 per day. Do not count on the old grace period: the temporary fine waiver introduced after the February 2026 airspace disruption closed on 21 April 2026 according to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, and 2026 reports indicate tourist and visit visas no longer carry a grace window. A Diwali trip that slips two days over a 14-day visa on arrival costs AED 100 in fines plus the risk of a note on your record. If you are on the 14-day option and plans change, apply for the extension before day 14.

Sri Lanka: the ETA is free, and still compulsory

Sri Lanka made its tourist ETA free of charge for 40 nationalities, including India, from 25 May 2026. The free ETA allows a 30-day stay with two entries from the date of first arrival.

The point that trips people up: free does not mean optional. The Department of Immigration and Emigration's notice states that all foreign nationals must obtain an ETA before arrival. Apply at eta.gov.lk, the only official portal. Copycat sites charging USD 50 or more for "assistance" still rank well in search results; if a site asks for payment, you are on the wrong one.

Approval commonly arrives within a day or two, but allow a week in the Diwali rush. Print or save the approval and carry it with your return ticket. Colombo, Kandy and the south-coast beaches are all comfortably inside a five-day window, and the free ETA leaves room for a second entry if you combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives.

Malaysia: visa-free until 31 December 2026, MDAC required

Malaysia's Immigration Department lists Indian nationals as visa-exempt for stays of up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, for tourism, business, social visits and transit. Diwali - Deepavali in Malaysia - is a public holiday there too, and Kuala Lumpur's Little India in Brickfields runs the largest celebrations outside the subcontinent.

Requirements:

• Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) submitted online at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac within three days before arrival. Free.
• Passport valid for at least six months.
• Return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation, which officers do ask for at KLIA.

The exemption is a unilateral Malaysian measure with a stated end date. If your trip falls in December, it is still covered; if you are planning ahead to 2027, check the Immigration Department's list again before booking - there is no announcement of an extension as of early September 2026.

Booking the trip: timing and fares

Every Indian fare guide says the same thing about Diwali: book in September. Demand for the first week of November builds through October, and fares for Bangkok, Dubai, Colombo and Kuala Lumpur typically climb in the last two weeks before the festival. We do not make price promises - airlines can and do release seats late - but the pattern over recent years has been that waiting for a late drop rarely pays.

A suggested sequence:

1. 1Now to mid-September: book flights. Check that your passport has six months' validity beyond your return date; Malaysia and the UAE both apply that rule strictly.
2. 2Four weeks out: apply for the Sri Lanka ETA or a UAE visit visa if you need one. Both are quick in theory and slow in late October.
3. 3One week out: confirm hotel bookings and onward tickets are printable; immigration officers in all four countries can ask for them.
4. 4Three days out: submit the MDAC (Malaysia) or TDAC (Thailand).
