What This Means for You

Connecting through Istanbul on one ticket, you need nothing, unless you are Indian or Nepalese and flying on to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela, in which case get the free e-ATV before departure. Leaving the airport for any reason means the normal entry rules for your passport apply.

Overview

Istanbul is the busiest connecting hub between Africa, South Asia and the Americas, and the transit rules are simpler than most travellers fear. A passenger who stays in the international transit area and does not pass immigration needs no visa, whatever their nationality. Anyone leaving the airport, including for an overnight stay or a Turkish Airlines stopover programme, needs whatever their nationality needs for entry: the exemption, an e-Visa or a sticker visa.

The e-ATV: The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi announced on 5 April 2024 that Indian and Nepalese passport holders travelling to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela via Istanbul Airport must obtain an electronic airport transit visa. It is free, issued at evisa.gov.tr from 15 April 2024, and must be printed and carried: airlines check it at departure and Turkish authorities at the transit point. It applies to airside transit, which otherwise needs nothing, and only to those four destinations.

Paid transit visas: Nationalities that need a sticker visa and want to leave the airport, or connect between terminals landside, apply for a transit visa through the authorised centre. The Islamabad embassy's 2026 schedule prices a single transit at PKR 52,200 to 63,800 and a double transit at PKR 69,600 to 81,200 depending on validity.

Practical points: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are on opposite sides of the city; a connection between them is a landside transfer and needs entry permission. Turkish Airlines' free stopover and Touristanbul tours require leaving the airport and therefore a visa or exemption. Baggage checked through to the final destination and a single ticket keep you airside; separate tickets usually mean collecting bags and passing immigration.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Understanding these can help you strengthen your application

  • 1Indian or Nepalese passenger to the four Latin American destinations without the e-ATV; airlines refuse boarding
  • 2Attempting a landside connection or stopover without a visa or exemption
  • 3Onward destination visa missing, checked by the airline

If your application is refused: You will receive a letter explaining the reason. In most cases, you can reapply immediately with a stronger application addressing the concerns raised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Nigerians need a transit visa for Istanbul?

Not if they stay airside on a through ticket. Leaving the airport, or connecting between Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen, needs a sticker visa obtained in advance through Sefa Visa; there is no visa on arrival or e-Visa for Nigerian passports.

What is the Türkiye e-ATV?

A free electronic airport transit visa that Indian and Nepalese passport holders have needed since 15 April 2024 when transiting Istanbul to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela, per the New Delhi embassy. It is obtained at evisa.gov.tr, printed, and checked by the airline at departure and by Turkish authorities in transit.

Can I do the Turkish Airlines stopover without a visa?

Only if your nationality is exempt or holds an e-Visa or sticker visa, because the stopover means leaving the airport. British, American, European and Chinese passengers qualify under the exemption; Indian, Pakistani and Nigerian passengers need the appropriate visa first.

Do I need a visa to change terminals or airports in Istanbul?

Changing between Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen means passing immigration, so yes for visa-required nationalities. Within Istanbul Airport, international-to-international connections stay airside.
