What This Means for You

If your passport is not on the e-Visa list, or you are going to India to work, study, research or report, you fill in the government form online and then hand it in with your passport at a visa application centre or the Indian mission. Budget for the mission's fee plus the centre's service charge, apply early because clearance can take weeks, and check the mission website for the exact document list for your category.

Overview

The regular visa, also called the paper or sticker visa, is the route for everyone the e-Visa does not cover. That includes nationalities missing from the e-Visa schedule, purposes outside the e-Visa categories, holders of diplomatic and official passports, and anyone who needs a visa longer than the e-Visa allows.

Who must use it: - Nationals of China, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iraq and other countries not on the e-Visa fee schedule - Anyone of Pakistani origin, whatever passport they hold, since the e-Visa and visa on arrival both exclude them - People coming to work for an Indian employer (Employment visa), study a full course (Student visa), do research (Research visa), report as journalists (Journalist visa), work as missionaries, take part in film shoots, or join long-term projects - People of Indian origin without an OCI card and foreign spouses of Indian citizens, who use the Entry (X) visa - Anyone whose e-Visa was refused and who wants a decision from a consular officer

How it works: The application starts at indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa. You fill in the form online, print it, sign it and submit the physical copy with your passport and supporting documents at an Indian Visa Application Centre or directly at the Indian mission on an appointment date. Most centres are run by outsourcing partners such as VFS Global and charge a service fee on top of the visa fee. You collect the passport from the centre or receive it by post. The Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines state that a foreigner should be within the jurisdiction of the mission when applying, and that an application made from a country other than your own is granted only after that mission consults the mission in your home country.

Fees: Regular visa fees are charged in local currency under instructions from the Ministry of External Affairs and are not refunded except where a visa is cancelled. They vary far more by nationality than e-Visa fees. Nigerian nationals pay a flat US$585 plus US$3 for the Indian Community Welfare Fund for every category and duration, payable in naira at the High Commission in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos. Maldivian nationals pay nothing. Most other missions publish a fee table on their own website and the visa application centre quotes the total including its service charge.

Processing: Missions do not publish a single standard. Straightforward tourist and business applications are often decided within a few working days, but any category that needs prior clearance from Delhi, and any applicant of Pakistani origin or from a country under referral, can wait weeks to months. The High Commission in Islamabad, for example, cites an average of 60 working days and a range of 15 to 90 days depending on clearance. Apply as early as your travel plans allow.

Categories: Tourist (T), Business (B), Employment (E), Student (S), Medical (MED) and Medical Attendant (MED X), Conference (C), Research (R), Journalist (J), Film (F), Intern (I), Project (P), Missionary (M), Mountaineering (MX), Transit (TR) and Entry (X). Validity of every visa runs from the date of issue, not the date of travel. A tourist visa cannot be converted to any other category inside India, with the single exception of conversion to an Entry (X-2) visa on marriage to an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder.

Two corridors to watch: India scaled back visa issuance in Bangladesh from August 2024; tourist visas were reported to resume from 28 June 2026 at the Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna centres, with medical visas issued throughout, so confirm current acceptance with the centre before booking. India suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals on 24 April 2025, revoked existing visas from 27 April 2025 and withdrew the SAARC visa exemption; long-term visas already held by Pakistani Hindu nationals were not affected, and no resumption had been announced as of 7 September 2026.

Application Steps

1

Identify the right category

Tourist, Business, Employment, Student, Medical, Conference, Research, Journalist, Entry or another category. The mission decides the exact sub-category. Do not apply for a tourist visa if you will be working, studying or reporting.

2

Complete the online form

At indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa. One form per person; no edits after submission. Upload the square photo and note the application ID.

3

Book an appointment

Choose a date and time at the Indian Visa Application Centre or, where there is none, at the mission. Pay online if the mission supports e-payment; otherwise pay at the centre.

4

Lodge the application in person

Bring the printed, signed form, your passport, photos and the supporting documents for your category. The passport stays with the mission during processing.

5

Wait for the decision

Track the passport using the application ID. Categories that need prior clearance, and applicants from referral countries or of Pakistani origin, should expect weeks to months.

6

Collect the passport and check the sticker

Check the category, validity, entries and any endorsements. Validity runs from the date of issue. Raise any error with the mission before you travel.

7

File the e-Arrival Card and register if required

Submit the free e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing. Holders of employment, student, research and medical visas valid beyond 180 days must register with the FRRO within 14 days of arrival.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Understanding these can help you strengthen your application

  • 1Applying for a tourist visa when the real purpose is work, study or journalism
  • 2Incomplete or inconsistent supporting documents, or a form that does not match the passport
  • 3Applying outside the jurisdiction of the mission without a good reason
  • 4Weak evidence of funds or of the intention to leave India at the end of the visit
  • 5Prior clearance from Delhi refused or not received in time
  • 6Previous overstay, breach of conditions or refusal of entry

If your application is refused: You will receive a letter explaining the reason. In most cases, you can reapply immediately with a stronger application addressing the concerns raised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for an India visa in a country where I do not live?

You can, but the Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines state that a visa applied for outside your country of origin or domicile is granted only after the mission consults the Indian mission in your home country. That consultation adds weeks and the local mission may limit you to a short single-entry tourist visa. Apply at home whenever possible.

How much is an India visa for Nigerian citizens?

The High Commission in Abuja's fee structure dated 1 July 2026 lists US$585 plus US$3 for the Indian Community Welfare Fund for Nigerian nationals, irrespective of visa category or duration. It is paid in naira at the Sterling Bank counter inside the High Commission or the Consulate General in Lagos, and applications are lodged in person with the physical documents. There is no e-Visa for Nigerian passports.

Can Bangladeshi citizens get an Indian tourist visa in 2026?

India restricted issuance in Bangladesh from August 2024 to medical and urgent cases. The High Commissioner announced that tourist visas would resume from 28 June 2026 at the Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna centres, with more to follow. Applications go through the Indian Visa Application Centres at ivacbd.com. Confirm that your centre is accepting the category before you book travel.

How long is an India tourist visa valid for?

It depends on the mission and nationality: many missions issue one-year, five-year and ten-year multiple-entry tourist visas to nationalities with strong bilateral arrangements, while others issue short single-entry visas. Validity always runs from the date of issue. Check the fee table on your mission's website, which lists the validities on offer.

Do I have to register with the police in India?

Tourists on visas of 180 days or less do not. Holders of employment, student, research, medical and some other long visas valid beyond 180 days must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office within 14 days of arrival, online at indianfrro.gov.in. Hotels file a Form C for every foreign guest, which is separate from your own obligations.

Can I convert a tourist visa to a work or student visa in India?

No. The guidelines allow no conversion of tourist, e-Visa or visa on arrival status except to an Entry (X-2) visa for someone who marries an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder during the stay. For any other change you leave India and apply for the correct category from your home country.
