Visa insurance · by destination

Do you need travel insurance for your visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover for the whole stay. For most other destinations we cover, insurance is not listed as a visa requirement, though it is still worth having. Each row below links to the official source.

When SafetyWing fits and when it doesn't

  • SafetyWing bills in 4-week periods, so it suits trips of about 3 weeks or more and trips across several countries.
  • For a short Schengen trip, a single-trip policy may cost less than a 4-week period.
  • We have not confirmed that consulates accept it. Check your consulate accepts this policy: compare the cover amount, the deductible, and validity across the whole territory and for every day of your stay with the consulate's rules (Schengen rules) before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance required for a Schengen visa?

Yes, for visa applicants. Article 15 of the EU Visa Code asks for travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 that is valid in every Schengen state for the whole stay and covers repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care and emergency hospital treatment. Travellers who can visit visa-free are not asked for it as a visa condition, though cover is still sensible.

Do the UK, the US or Canada require travel insurance for a visitor visa?

Our data does not list it as a requirement for their visitor visas. Rules can change, so check the official page linked in the table before you apply.

Will my consulate accept a SafetyWing policy?

We have not confirmed that any consulate accepts it. Check that the policy meets your consulate's rules (cover amount, deductible, validity across the whole territory and for the whole stay) before you buy, and ask the consulate or visa centre if you are unsure.

What should my insurance certificate show for a Schengen visa?

Your name, the dates of cover (the whole stay), the area covered (all Schengen states), the amount of medical cover (at least EUR 30,000) and that it covers repatriation and emergency treatment. Visa centres check these details, so compare the certificate with your itinerary.

Is insurance worth it where it is not a visa requirement?

Usually, yes. Medical treatment abroad can be expensive, and a visa or visa-free entry does not pay for it. Whether you need it is your call; it is just not a condition of the visa in those places.
