Visa Extension: How to Extend Your Stay Abroad

Can You Extend Tourist Visas?

It depends on the country. The fees and rules below were checked against official sources in September 2026; they change often, so confirm on the linked official page before you apply.

Schengen Visa Extension

Generally NOT possible except in the cases set out in Article 33 of the EU Visa Code:

• Force majeure or humanitarian reasons (serious illness, a cancelled flight you could not avoid) — the extension is free of charge
• Serious personal reasons — a fee of €30 applies

Process: apply to the immigration authority or police of the Schengen state you are in, before your visa or 90-day allowance runs out. The extension is recorded in your passport and cannot take your total stay beyond what the authority decides is justified. Since the Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026, your entries and exits are logged electronically, so an unextended overstay is recorded automatically.

UK Visitor Visa Extension

Possible only in limited cases (gov.uk, September 2026):

• If you were given permission for less than 6 months, you can apply to extend up to a total of 6 months
• Visitors receiving private medical treatment can apply for a further 6 months at a time, with no limit on repeats, if they can pay for the treatment
• Academic visitors can extend to a total of 12 months
• Fee: £1,172 per application as of September 2026 (a £1,000 super priority service is optional)
• Apply online before your current permission expires

A standard 6-month visitor cannot extend beyond 6 months simply to stay longer; you would need to leave and apply again.

US B1/B2 Extension

Possible:

• File Form I-539 with USCIS before the date on your I-94 admission record expires — it is the I-94 date that matters, not the expiry date printed on your visa
• USCIS suggests filing at least 45 days before your stay expires
• Fee: $420 online or $470 on paper, per the USCIS fee schedule (Form G-1055, updated 29 May 2026)
• You must show a valid reason and evidence of funds and intent to depart
• Processing typically takes months and varies by service centre; check the USCIS processing-times tool
• If you filed on time, you remain in a period of authorised stay while the application is pending, even after the I-94 date passes

Thailand Extension

Possible once per entry, at an immigration office (Ministry of Interior announcements published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026; Tourism Authority of Thailand):

• Since 15 September 2026, visa-exempt entry for tourism is 30 days for nationals of 60 countries and territories, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and most EU states — down from the 60 days that applied to earlier entries
• Travellers who entered before 15 September 2026 keep the 60-day stay stamped on entry
• Either stay can be extended once by up to 30 days at any Thai Immigration office before your stamp expires (form TM.7, one photo, passport copies, proof of accommodation), subject to approval
• Fee: THB 1,900 is the amount immigration offices have charged for a tourist extension and is reported as unchanged under the new rules — bring cash and confirm at the office when you apply
• Often same-day at provincial offices; Bangkok (Chaeng Watthana) can take most of a day
• Repeated exemption entries are scrutinised, and visa-exempt land-border entries are capped at two per calendar year for most nationalities, so the old pattern of extending indefinitely through "border runs" is no longer an option

UAE Extension

Possible, subject to caps:

• Dubai visit visas are extended through the GDRFA, and visas for the other emirates through the ICP, in blocks of 30 days
• Fee: Dubai's GDRFA extension is widely reported at AED 600 plus VAT (about AED 630) per 30-day extension as of 2026; ICP fees differ — check the official portal or your visa sponsor
• Total stay is capped (commonly 90 days for a 30-day visit visa extended twice), and some visa types issued since 2024 cannot be extended in-country at all
• Apply before expiry: overstay fines were standardised at AED 50 per day in February 2026 and the old grace period for tourists was removed

Singapore Extension

Possible, online only (ICA, September 2026):

• Apply through the ICA e-Service when your Short-Term Visit Pass has 14 days or fewer remaining; walk-in applications are not accepted
• Fee: S$40 extension fee applies if the extension takes your total stay to 90 days or more from entry; visa-required nationals also pay a S$30 visa fee
• Processing within 5 working days; the length granted is at ICA's discretion
• Apply before expiry — an extension is not automatic

Japan Extension

Difficult:

• Apply for "extension of period of stay" at your regional immigration bureau before your temporary visitor permission expires
• Valid reasons required (illness, unavoidable disruption); extensions of tourist stays are rarely granted
• Fee: for applications received from 1 October 2026, ¥10,000 (in person or online) when the extension granted is 3 months or less, rising with the length of stay granted (¥33,000 in person or ¥27,000 online for 1 year); applications received by 30 September 2026 pay the old ¥6,000 (¥5,500 online) even if permission comes later (Immigration Services Agency leaflet)

General Tips

Overstaying Consequences

• Criminal record (severe cases)

Never overstay. Leave before your permission expires.
